Stone Photography Gallery

This month saw individual gallery tours with some new customers. It is always a fun experience introducing people to our work.

December 2017

We took the month off for the holidays.

November 2017

On the fourth of this month, Chris Ann Bachtel hosted an invitation only release party for Andrea’s new work titled, Jellies. The response to this event was incredibly enthusiastic. The energy of over 100 people was palpable and well exceeded our expectations. We cannot thank Chris Ann enough for the work she did to make this event a reality. Leslie Hunter and her event staff did an outstanding job preparing the food, staging the building, and so competently serving such a huge crowd.

The two events are Big Names Small Art (BNSA) and Art Auction. This honor also brings with it the opportunity to give back to this wonderful institution.

We will both have one image in each event that will be exhibited in the Museum for three weeks before the auctions take place.

January 2016

We continued to have small groups visiting our gallery this month. In addition, we worked on our mission statement for the Salon Des Exclus:

Salon des Exclus
Est. September 2013

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." -George Bernard Shaw

Rejection is the fate of most artists be it in the 21st, 20th or 19th century when Emperor Napoleon III felt pressured to order an exhibition of rejected works at the Salon des Refusés in Paris.

Salon des Exclus consists of four artists with four unique visions who have all struggled with rejection and disinterest from traditional venues. We have been excluded for not being edgy enough, for being too edgy. We have been excluded because our art doesn't look like photography. We have been excluded because it wasn't pink enough or not quite the right format or size.

We came together to support each other and to explore ways for our art to find broader exposure. Together we reject the idea that our art be relegated to anonymity.

December 2015

Color AwardsWe were invited by YoloArts in Woodland, CA to present works by the Salon des Exclus, a group we formed nearly three years ago with photographers Joe Finkleman and Michael Radin. This is a very exciting prospect as each of us has a very clear and different vision. The show will run from March 31 to May 3 and will be titled Salon des Exclus: Exhibition #One. The opening reception will be held on April 1 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at Gallery 625 in the Erwin Meier Administration Building, 625 Court Street, Woodland, CA.

They contacted her in May and asked if she would be willing to enter into a contractual agreement to give them license to sell large, off-size limited editions of her limited edition images. The work will be available in any number of their 30 brick and mortar galleries, on-line, and in their catalogues. They have one gallery in SoHo, one in Dubai and Moscow, and in most major cities in Europe including two galleries in Paris.

September 2013

We discovered a review of Andrea's City Reflections Project by David E. Wolf, a physicist and photographer from Boston, Massachusetts. What follows are excerpts from the review from his Hati and Skoll Gallery Blog:

"A few weeks ago I found in LensWork (magazine) the truly glorious and amazing work of photographer Andrea Stone. I was happy to find that these images could also be seen on "The Stone Photography" website, which Andrea shares with her husband Rob Stone.

Ms. Stone relates her transformative moment as being drawn to Claude Monet's work "The Magpie," and with that to the realization of what an image can be. She has made a study of cityscapes reflected in distorted patterns in window glasses. But such a description is really way too mechanical, because what she has created is in itself transformation. It bridges photography with impressionist art, creating magical pictures that could just as easily be paintings. When the building doing the reflecting is by architect Frank Gehry, the end result is simply amazing! Looking at her work is one of those great wow moments, when you just fall in love with photography all over again."

Finally, we are making headway with a goal we began talking about nearly three years ago. We envisioned our work, especially those large images shot in medium format, as ones that might find a home in the corporate world of financial institutions, law offices, hotels, and healthcare settings. Recently, we submitted our work for representation to two corporate art consulting firms, Art Consulting Services in Sacramento and DSA Fine Arts in New York, and we were accepted. We hope at some point, in the not-too-distant future, some of our photographs will be seen in public spaces!!

September brings some exciting news. Andrea has had four of her images selected for the juried art show at the 2012 Modesto International Architecture Festival. This is a great event promoting art and film that speaks to the creative contribution that architecture can make to the world we inhabit. The festival, running from September 15th through September 23rd, has lectures, films, exhibitions, tours and a gala first night opening on September 15th. The art show will be held in the newly opened Building Imagination Center where you can see Andrea's large prints for the first time.

August 2012

In late July and early August we returned to Portland, where Andrea's City Reflections Project began just a year ago. We shot in Portland and continued on to Seattle and Vancouver B.C. July 2012

We are in two art gallery shows this month where examples of our newest work will be displayed. The first show, at the Viewpoint Photographic Art Center's Members' Show in Sacramento, will run from July 11th through August 4th. One feature of the gallery, which is a lot of fun, are the portfolio drawers containing the work of the members represented by the gallery. Our drawer contains a nice selection of matted 16" x 20" prints from our two new portfolios.

The second show, the 2012 Annual Juried Membership Show at the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, will run from July 20th through August 18th. If you haven't discovered the Blue Line Gallery, you are in for a treat.

Finally, Rob has been selected as one of six artists representing the Viewpoint Photographic Art Center in the annual KVIE Art Auction this fall. His image entitled "Close To Home" will be auctioned during the live auction September 28th to the 30th. All proceeds go to our local PBS affiliate that serves the Sacramento region.

Brandells Globe

Andrea B. Stone — Brandell's Globe

In the City Reflections Gallery we now have a new series of eight images, from our fall shoot in New York City, entitled Brandell's World. Kim Brandell's Trump Tower Globe sits at the southwest corner of Central Park at Columbus Circle. The first five images taken from this pounded metal structure at first appear abstract, but when you look closely, you will discover a world of reflections of people, taxis, and storefront signs at this busy intersection. The last three photographs, taken from the underside of this sculpture, capture abstract shapes, shadows, and textures, with the exception of the greenery from Central Park.

November 2011

This fall we continued working on Andrea's project, City Reflections, with a trip to Chicago and New York City. We have now posted eleven new images from this shoot in the City Reflections Gallery.
